Top 5 Ways to Kick Off Summer with Your Family!

The lazy days of summer are around the corner. Warm, languid days stretching out in front of us with no agenda, other than to have fun. Look no further for some creative, local experiences (and even better, they are low or no cost for kids). So explore San Luis Obispo County's riches with your family in true summer style, and make lasting memories!

1. Blues Baseball

Take me out to the ball game.... The SLO Blues play Memorial Day through August, locally at Sinsheimer Park in San Luis Obispo. This Summer Collegiate team consistently ranks among the top 25 teams nationally, and is a thrill to watch. Bring your chairs or blankets, and enjoy the show. They have interactive events for the kids throughout the game and a kids' zone, even better, kids 12 and under get in free. Full concessions available!

 2. The Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show

May 31-June 2, cruise down to the Pismo Beach Pier where the streets are filled with classic cars. Take a walk through history, with cars from every generation represented. Talk with the owners, see demonstrations, and enjoy the surrounding shops. Stick around for the Saturday night Sunset Cruise at 6pm, a sight to see, hear, and feel! This is a free spectator event.

3. Check out our local Libraries

The San Luis Obispo County Library system is in full swing in summer, with locations throughout the county! Hosting movies for all ages, music for the family, a Princess Party, teen programs like making liquid nitrogen ice cream and DIY Zen Gardens, and even a variety of visiting animal presentations, there is literally something for everyone. Our local libraries have so much more than just books these days!

4. Fishing on Harford Pier in Avila Beach

While you may not want to spend a whole day on a fishing charter in the ocean with kids, you can easily rent gear and fish right off Harford Pier in Avila Beach. Fishing off this pier does not require a license, and there's no worry of sea sickness. Just drop your line, and while you're waiting for a nibble you and your family can come up with the best "fish stories". Of course, you can always stop at the Old Porte Fishery on the way home to ensure you don't return empty handed.

5. Toy Story on the Oceanfront Lawn at The Cliffs

To infinity and beyond!
June 9th, bring your blankets and low backed chairs for The Cliffs Hotel + Spa's oceanfront viewing of Toy Story. Dress as your favorite character from the movie, for a chance to win ~ The Cliffs is giving away a night's stay, transportation to and 4 tickets for Toy Story 4 (which also comes out in June). You may be torn between watching the sun set into the Pacific and watching Buzz & Woody, but either show is amazing. This event is free and open to the public.

Top 5 Places to Take Your Holiday Photos in SLO County

Whether it's on Instagram, Facebook, or a real live holiday card, a fantastic backdrop can make a good photo GREAT! With no lack of amazing scenery in San Luis Obispo county, here are a few you may not know about, but that will make your holiday photos unforgettable!

1. Fiscallini Ranch Preserve

Just up Highway 1, in Cambria, is Fiscallini Ranch Preserve. Free to the public and open daily from dawn to dusk, this property offers over a mile of ocean view bluffs with a meandering boardwalk, amazing vistas and a variety of cool benches, perfect for that family photo! Pack a picnic, as it is a great place for a walk, to explore nature or just get away as well.

2.Edna Valley Vineyard ~

I remember years ago when this tasting room was first built, being blown away by the view. Just past the airport in San Luis Obispo, you turn the corner and enter the vineyard. However, it is not until you step into the tasting room that you fully appreciate the fantastic landscape and you feel as if you are sitting in the middle of the vines. Stop in to taste some wine and snap a pic or two in front of this framed masterpiece. Truly magical!

3. Point San Luis Lighthouse ~

Not only is a coup to find a place that others haven't photographed, but to find a historic spot that not many people even know about is pretty cool! With fabulous vistas of Avila Beach, Port San Luis, and Harford Pier, the Lighthouse is accessible only by guided tour on Wednesdays & Saturdays (reservations are required). Along with expansive ocean views, you also have a chance to tour the lighthouse and learn its history.

4. Serenity Swing ~

Located just on the fringe of the Cal Poly campus is the trail-head to Poly Canyon. This 4 mile round trip hike can be a little strenuous, so be prepared, but what greets you at the top is incredible! Perch yourself (or your kiddos) on the swing and celebrate the fantastic views of San Luis Obispo as far as the eye can see. Pump your legs a little and relive your carefree childhood!

5. Backyard of The Cliffs ~

Of course, I would be remiss not to mention our own "backyard". Easy to get to if you are a guest, or stop in for a refreshing libation on our patio and stay for the view! Snap a pic from your table, gather on the lawn, with its panoramic views of the Pacific, or find our Selfie Spot. No Photoshop necessary, we are fortunate to have this amazing blue backdrop 24/7, fabulous during the day and stellar at sunset, please come and enjoy.
Hint ~ find the beach stairs, great ocean view photo op right at the top!
